New Delhi, May 04: The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) organised the ‘Run for Sun’ marathon on the occasion of International Sun Day, highlighting India’s rapid progress in solar energy adoption.
The event marked the achievement of over 150 GW of installed solar capacity and strong momentum under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. The scheme has facilitated 30 lakh rooftop solar installations, with a record 2.7 lakh installations completed in April 2026 alone, benefiting over 45 lakh households nationwide.
India’s solar capacity has surged from 2.82 GW in 2014 to 150 GW as of March 31, reflecting a 53-fold increase. Notably, the latest 50 GW addition was achieved in just 15 months, marking the fastest expansion phase to date. Around 50% of the country’s installed electricity capacity now comes from non-fossil fuel sources, achieved well ahead of the 2030 target.
India currently ranks third globally in renewable energy capacity, reinforcing its leadership in the global clean energy transition.
The ‘Run for Sun’ event, held at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, featured 2 km and 5 km races and saw participation from citizens across age groups, reflecting growing public engagement in sustainability initiatives.
Speaking at the event, MNRE Secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi emphasised that the initiative represents a collective step towards a sustainable and self-reliant India, with continued focus on expanding solar access to households across the country.
