No Coal Shortage, Power Supply Stable: PIB Fact Check

India Sees Record Peak Power Demand as Heatwave Intensifies

New Delhi, May 04: Dismissing viral claims of a severe power crisis, the government’s fact-checking unit PIB Fact Check on Sunday said there is no coal shortage or grid failure in the country, terming such reports as misleading.

The clarification followed a widely circulated social media post alleging record power demand of 277 GW, critical coal shortages at thermal plants, and load-shedding in multiple states amid rising summer temperatures.

Refuting the claims, the government stated that India’s power system remains stable and adequately supplied. The maximum peak demand recorded on May 2, 2026, stood at 229 GW, which was fully met without any shortage.

PIB Fact Check said such posts are aimed at creating unnecessary panic, reiterating that both generation and distribution systems are functioning normally under established protocols.

Coal availability was also described as sufficient, with total stock at thermal power plants standing at 53.702 million tonnes—adequate to meet current requirements.

Addressing concerns over grid stability during peak demand hours, the government noted that existing frequency control defence mechanisms provide sufficient operational margin to ensure secure and reliable grid operations.

The clarification underscores the government’s assurance that power availability across the country remains stable despite seasonal demand fluctuations.
