New Delhi, May 01: Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said India has maintained stability in petrol and diesel prices for over four years despite ongoing volatility in global energy markets.
Speaking at the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference – South Gujarat in Surat, Puri noted that geopolitical tensions, including disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, alongside wars and supply chain challenges, have significantly impacted global energy dynamics.
He emphasised that India has avoided reactive policy decisions, maintaining price stability even as several neighbouring countries experienced fuel price increases ranging between 39% and 66%, along with supply shortages and rationing.
The remarks came during discussions on energy security and economic resilience as part of the Vibrant Gujarat outreach programme ahead of its next global summit cycle.
Union Jal Shakti Minister C. R. Patil also addressed the conference, highlighting Surat’s industrial contributions to national infrastructure and defence projects. He cited the use of steel from AM/NS in the Chenab Rail Bridge and the production of K9 Vajra units at Larsen & Toubro’s Hazira facility.
On water management, Patil highlighted the creation of over 70 lakh conservation structures through public participation, adding that the Surat Municipal Corporation generates more than ₹300 crore annually from treated wastewater reuse.
He also emphasised the need for sustainable water usage, noting that agriculture accounts for 83% of water consumption, followed by households and industry, and urged industries to adopt responsible groundwater practices.
The conference reinforced India’s focus on balancing energy security, economic stability, and sustainable resource management amid evolving global challenges.
