New Delhi, April 15: Indian Railways has achieved 99.6% electrification of its broad gauge network, marking a significant milestone in operational efficiency and sustainability, according to a government statement released Wednesday.
The national transporter now runs around 25,000 trains daily and carried 741 crore passengers in FY 2025–26. Total revenue for the year stood at approximately ₹80,000 crore, while freight movement reached a record 1,670 million tonnes.
Electrification has accelerated sharply over the past decade, rising from just 20% of the network in 2014 to 69,873 route kilometres by March 2026. The shift has reduced dependence on diesel, delivering savings of about 180 crore litres of fuel and ₹6,000 crore in FY 2024–25 alone.
India’s electrification levels now surpass major global peers, including the UK, Russia and China, underscoring rapid infrastructure modernisation.
Safety and technology adoption have also scaled up. The Kavach Automatic Train Protection System has been deployed across 3,100 route kilometres, with expansion underway. AI-enabled Video Surveillance Systems have been installed at 1,874 stations, while Integrated Passenger Information Systems linked to real-time train data are operational at 1,405 stations.
Track infrastructure has seen sustained investment, with 54,600 km renewed between 2014 and 2026. High-speed capable tracks (above 110 kmph) have expanded significantly, improving network efficiency.
Premium services continue to gain traction. The Vande Bharat Express network carried 3.98 crore passengers in FY26, with cumulative ridership crossing 9.1 crore. The recently launched sleeper variant has also shown early momentum.
To cater to budget travellers, Amrit Bharat Express services have been introduced, with 60 trains currently operational, offering affordable and modern travel options.
