Faridabad, April 08 The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved an investment of ₹26,069.5 crore for the 1,720 MW Kamala Hydroelectric Project in Arunachal Pradesh, with a completion timeline of 96 months.
The project will be implemented through a joint venture between NHPC Limited under Ministry of Power and the Government of Arunachal Pradesh. It is expected to generate 6,870 million units of clean energy annually, strengthening regional power supply, supporting peak demand management, and enhancing national grid stability, while also providing flood moderation benefits in the Brahmaputra basin.
The Centre will provide ₹4,743.98 crore towards flood moderation, ₹1,340 crore for enabling infrastructure, and ₹750 crore as Central Financial Assistance for the state’s equity share.
NHPC CMD Bhupender Gupta said the approval underscores India’s focus on clean energy expansion, adding that the project will contribute to energy security, infrastructure development, and employment generation in the region.
Arunachal Pradesh will receive 12% free power, along with an additional 1% for local area development. The project is also expected to drive socio-economic growth through improved connectivity and community infrastructure.
NHPC is concurrently developing other major hydropower projects in the region, including Subansiri Lower (2,000 MW), Dibang Multipurpose (2,880 MW), and Etalin (3,097 MW).
