Indian Railways Expands Kavach 4.0 Safety System to Cover Additional 472 km

Kavach 4.0 deployment on Northern Railway

New Delhi, Jan 31: Indian Railways has commissioned 472.3 route kilometres (RKms) of the Kavach Version 4.0 Automatic Train Protection System across three sections, enhancing rail safety significantly.

The newly included sections are Vadodara–Virar (344 km), Tuglakabad–Palwal (35 km), and Manpur–Sarmatanr (93.3 km), representing the highest RKms of Kavach commissioned in a single day and month. Kavach employs microprocessors, GPS, and radio communication to notify train operators of nearby trains and can automatically apply brakes if necessary.

With this expansion, Kavach has now been integrated over 1,306.3 RKms in total, surpassing the previous 834 RKms. This system has been crucial for high-traffic routes, notably enhancing operational safety on the busy Delhi–Mumbai corridor.

The successful operation of Train No 13305 Sasaram Intercity Express on the Manpur–Sarmatanr section, including a head-on collision test, demonstrated Kavach’s effectiveness.

Additionally, Kavach installation continues on 4,235 RKms of East Central Railway, with ongoing projects aiming to improve speeds on key routes by 2026, further contributing to rail safety and passenger confidence.
