New Delhi, Dec 30: At least 150 unique products from northeastern India have been marked for Geographical Indication (GI) tagging over the next two years, as announced by the Ministry of Development of North-East Region (MDoNER).
This initiative aims to support local Agri-Horti, Handloom, and Handicraft sectors, preserving their unique identities. Additionally, MDoNER has approved the establishment of the North East Science and Technology Cluster at IIT Guwahati with a budget of Rs 22.98 crore, aimed at promoting research, innovation, and skill development.
The cluster will focus on various technological hubs, including those for semiconductor and artificial intelligence, and innovation in bamboo technology and biodegradable plastics.
The ministry is also enhancing Traditional Bamboo Artisan Clusters for better market access and livelihoods. The northeast contributes 96% of India’s agarwood production, with significant export increases anticipated.
The region’s economic potential was further demonstrated during the Rising North East Investors Summit, which attracted investment interests totaling Rs 4.48 lakh crore.
