New Delhi, Dec 21: Indian Railways will increase fares starting December 26 to generate an additional Rs 600 crore in revenue.
The fare hike includes an additional 1 paisa per km for Ordinary Class travel over 215 km, and 2 paise per km for Mail and Express non-AC and AC classes.
No fare increases will apply to journeys less than 215 km or to suburban and monthly season tickets. Increased operational costs, including a doubling of manpower expenses, fueled the fare adjustment, despite no changes to freight rates since 2018.
Improved safety and operational efficiency were highlighted, including the success of increased train mobilization during the festival season.
