Government Delivers 95.5 Lakh Homes to Beneficiaries Under PM Awas Yojana

On December 9, 2023, Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal reported in Parliament that the Centre has delivered 95.54 lakh houses to beneficiaries through the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY).

A 2020 slum survey identified 6.5 crore people living in slums across India. The responsibility for slum rehabilitation lies with state governments. In Delhi, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is involved in slum demolition and rehabilitation, having assisted 3,414 households under specific policies.

PMAY has been providing central assistance for housing since 2015 and has been revamped into PMAY-U 2.0 to help an additional 1 crore beneficiaries starting in 2024. A total of Rs 2.05 lakh crore has been allocated for PMAY-related projects, with Rs 1,800 crore specifically for slum redevelopment initiatives.
