New Delhi, Dec 05: Technological advancements in Indian Railways (IR) continue to evolve, particularly with the implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems aimed at enhancing safety and efficiency.
Recently, tenders have been awarded for the deployment of AI-based Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) covering an additional 981 RKms, building on existing systems that detect elephant movement along tracks, currently operational over 141 RKms on the NF Railway. This system provides real-time alerts to loco pilots, station masters, and control rooms, facilitating immediate preventive actions to ensure safety.
Additionally, pilot initiatives are assessing AI-driven predictive maintenance for railway signalling, yielding measurable outcomes through Standard Failure Prediction Logics and alert mechanisms.
Various advanced technologies have been adopted, including the Online Monitoring of Rolling Stock System (OMRS) and the Wheel Impact Load Detector (WILD), which are critical for the predictive maintenance of rolling stock.
Recent collaborations include a Memorandum of Understanding with the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) for the Wayside Machine Vision based Inspection System (MVIS), enabling AI/ML-driven detection of discrepancies in moving trains.
Another agreement with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is for the implementation of an Automatic Wheel Profile Measurement System (AWPMS), which facilitates real-time, non-contact measurement of train wheel profiles to monitor geometry and wear accurately. These developments were reported by Union Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw in the Rajya Sabha.
