One Day Regional Level Workshop On“Use of Biomass for Co-firing in Thermal Power Plants”

New Delhi, OCt 31: Strengthening the NLCIL’s Commitments towards COP 26 & COP 27 on Climate Change Actions, NLC India Limited (NLCIL) (A ‘Navaratna’ Govt of India Enterprise) under the aegis of Mission SAMARTH (Ministry of Power, GoI), successfully conducted a “Regional Level One Day Workshop on Use of Biomass for Co-firing in Thermal Power Plants” on 28.10.2023.

The program was inaugurated by Prasanna Kumar Motupalli, Chairman and Managing Director (NLCIL).NLCIL Functional Directors K. Mohan Reddy, Director / Planning & Projects, Suresh Chandra Suman, Director Mines and Director  Finance (Addl. Charge), Samir Swarup, Director HR, M. Venkatachalam, Director Power and CVO,NLCIL Thiru Appakkannu Govindarajan IPoS, Sushil Kumar Arjaria, Member – SAMARTH Mission, Dr. Samuel Rajkumar,Joint Chief Environmental Engineer (M), Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB), Cuddalore, M. Ramachandran, Managing Director, Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation Limited (TANTRANSCO), G. Dhabaseelan, Executive Director (Thermal) graced event. AllSenior officials and Executives of NLCIL participated.

The workshop was attended & technical presentations were deliberated by all the stakeholders like Mission SAMARTH,Research Institutions viz Anna University, Annamalai University, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) – Coimbatore, National Institute of Technology (NIT) – Trichy, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB), GENCOs from Southern States (Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala), Biomass Pellet Manufacturers, Biomass Equipment Manufacturers viz M/s LPEC India Pvt. Ltd., M/s Suzhiyam Industrial Machines Private Ltd., M/s Enhanced Biofuels & Technologies Pvt Ltd., M/s Tiruchirappalli Engineering and Technology Cluster (TREAT), M/s Schenck Process, Farmers Producer Organizations (FPOs), Financial Institutions viz National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), National Power Training Institute (NPTI) and many more from Pellet Manufacturers start-up organizations.

During the workshop, eminent speakers deliberatedon the topics mentioned below:

  • Biomass Resource Assessment, densification & transport – supply chain Management
  • Sustainability aspects of Biomass production & utilization including Rural Development and Financial support schemes
  • Issues& Challenges in Pelleting, Torrefaction of Pellets and Scaling up to meet the Industrial needs
  • Technical & Safety aspects in Biomass Co-firing with Coal in pulverized Coal fired Boilers
  • To assess the impact of Biomass co-firing on post Combustion process including FGD operation
  • Designated Labs & Certification bodies for testing of Agro-based biomass pellets,
  • Economics of Biomass co-firing, Impact in critical parameters and regulatory issues in Biomass co-firing
  • Biomass co-firing impact on Human Health and Animal Food-related issues.
  • Financial aspects, Government Schemes etc.

The One Day Workshop successfully conducted by NLC India Limited (NLCIL) on 28.10.2023 paved the sustainable platform,benefitting more than 250 nos. of participants from all over the country and created awareness, developed connect between all the stakeholders with regards to Biomass Co-firing in Thermal Power Plants. By conducting this work shop, NLCIL has reiterated the Commitments towards Conservations of Natural Resources, Protection of Environment, Compliance to Statutory Requirements and adopting to the Energy Transition changes for Sustainable Green Power Generation for the Well Being of the Nation.
