6.8 magnitude earthquake shakes Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula

Vladivostok, Aug 3 A 6.8 magnitude aftershock occurred off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Sunday, as reported by the Ministry of Emergency Situations. The tremor struck at 17:37 local time, located 277 km from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky at a depth of 26 km.

The Kamchatka Tsunami Warning and Monitoring Center indicated that tsunami waves would not exceed 19 cm, yet local authorities advised residents to avoid the coastline. Earlier that day, a 6.7 magnitude earthquake was reported in the Kuril Islands, with some agencies initially estimating its strength at 6.35.

This follows a significant 8.7 magnitude quake on July 30, which was among the strongest ever recorded worldwide, but resulted in no casualties according to the Kremlin. The region has since experienced over 125 aftershocks, including several above 6.0 magnitude, with experts noting that aftershocks tend to be most intense shortly after a major earthquake.

Shallow earthquakes like the recent one are considered particularly hazardous due to their potential for significant ground shaking and resultant damage.
