Prime Minister dedicates IPDS Varanasi project today

Varanasi, Sep 19 Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated to the nation, the Integrated Power Distribution Scheme (IPDS) project of Old Kashi in Varanasi district here on Tuesday. The project was dedicated in a function here in the presence of CM of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath and MP, Chandauli, Dr. Mahendra Nath Pandey and other dignitaries from Government of India and the state of Uttar Pradesh.

This extensive and complex work, under GoI’s IPDS scheme has been executed by Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID), a ‘Navratna’ CPSE under Ministry of Power and the Central Transmission Utility of the country. POWERGRID acted as a Consultant to Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited (PUVVNL), and completed the work within the stipulated timeline of two-years.

The ₹362 crore project has been funded by Government of India and UPPCL in 60:40 ratio respectively. The project, which has been executed with the help of latest available construction techniques, will help in saving energy loss caused due to theft, rain or storm disruption. With reduction in voltage fluctuations, it will simultaneously also ensure quality of power.

Major works executed under the scheme included underground cabling of about 1500 km, bifurcation of 52 overloaded feeders in addition to capacity addition of 150 MVA. A total number of 60,000 consumers have been connected to the underground cabling system and 459 distribution transformers in Old Kashi have been linked to the newly laid underground system.

The infrastructure created also includes a new state-of the-art 33/11 kV GIS Sub-station, a first at this capacity, in the busy and highly densely populated Chowk area of Varanasi. This substation has been constructed in an area of around 144 square meter using the GIS (Gas Insulated Switchyard) technology, which requires substantially lower space as compared to conventional substations.  This new substation has considerably brought down the tripping rate, ensuring safe and smooth power supply, reliable and quality power flow, while also leading to reduced complaints related with electricity, in the area.

The city of Varanasi, owing to its religious, cultural, spiritual and educational significance, attracts tourists from all over the world and is always bubbling with activity. The low hanging bundled wires not only posed a risk to life and property but led to unreliable power supply due to increased number of trippings. This IPDS project has ensured achievement of twin objectives of 24×7 reliable power supply while also maintaining rich heritage and aesthetics of this glorious city.

The scenic sights of the historical city, have now been freed from the chaos of intermingled wires and poles of electricity. The streets of the country’s cultural and spiritual city of Kashi now bear a neat and clean look as the electric wires and poles have given way to underground cabling. Varanasi, one of the world’s oldest cities, now bears a new modern look also, albeit without compromising on its heritage.
