NLCIL UNDERTAKES MASS TREE PLANTATION DRIVE ECO PARK INAUGURATED BY UNION MINISTER


Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister for Coal, Mines And Parliamentary Affairs  launched a Mass Tree Plantation Drive across various  locations of NLCIL and its subsidiaries, through virtual mode, today (19.08.2021). The drive has been taken up as part of the ‘Vriksharopan Abhiyan’  being observed across the country, at  nearly 50 locations of the PSE’s  of the Union Ministry of Coal. Also present on the occasion were Raosaheb Patil Danve, Minister of State for Coal, Mines and Railways, Dr. Anil Kumar Jain, Secretary, Ministry of Coal and senior officials of the Ministry, as well as top Management and senior officials of  Coal / Lignite PSUs .

In his message on the occasion, Union Minister, Shri Joshi informed the plan of  Coal and Lignite companies to develop greenery across 24,000 hectares of land by planting 60 Lakhs tree saplings, suitable to local conditions.  He also shared that while Coal Ministry is concentrating on Coal production, an important factor for industrial growth, it also give equal importance to restoration of land, by developing green belt in the mining areas.

Vriksharopan Abhiyan’ is celebrated every year with enthusiasm by   the Coal/Lignite Public Sector Enterprises, functioning under the Ministry of Coal, Government of India, with the objective of enriching the bio-diversity in the mining areas and generating awareness about the imperative of undertaking wide-spread and sustained greening activities.  As part of Tree Plantation Drive, programmes have simultaneously been organised at more than 300 locations spread in 38 districts of 10 Coal/Lignite bearing states.

On its part, this year NLCIL has organised events at all its units, targeting to plant 2,41,200 tree saplings . Of  this,  1,08,400 Nos. of saplings have been  planted in  Neyveli itself across its  Mines, Township,  adjoining villages, residences of NLCIL employees as well as those of contract employees, CISF personnel and the Rehabilitation and Resettlement colonies, drawing active and enthusiastic  participation by all .

The drive has also been carried out at the other project sites of the Company in Barsingsar in Rajasthan, Talabira in Odisha, Ghatampur in Uttar Pradesh, Thoothukudi, Aruppukottai and Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu.  In addition, 1,32,800 tree saplings were distributed among  general public, employees .

To commemorate the event, Union Minister Shri Joshi also inaugurated two Eco Toursim Parks Viz., Mine-II, Neyveli Eco Park, Tamil Nadu, developed by NLC India Limited, Mudwani Dam Eco Park, Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh developed by Northern Coal fields Ltd. He also laid foundation  for Jhanjra Eco Park, Paschim Bardhaman to be developed by Eastern Coal Fields, Chandrasekar Azad Orient Eco Park, Jharsuguda, Odisha to be developed by Mahanadi Coal Fields Ltd.

The Neyveli Eco Tourism Park covers an area of about 10 hectares enriched with lot of bio diversity.  It boasts of additional attractions including a  Children’s play area, Bird watching point, Eco friendly boating, Medicinal Plant Garden, Divine Plants / Star Plant garden, Orchard, Mist Chamber and Nursery, Goshala etc.  Going forward, NLCIL  proposes to integrate the parks  with local tourism circuits of Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) and Puducherry Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC) to popularize them and increase footfall.

Rakesh Kumar, CMD, NLCIL, Shaji John, Director (Power) participated in the function from NUPPL Power Station, Ghatampur, Uttar Pradesh.  While R. Vikraman, Director (Human Resources), Jaikumar Srinivasan, Director (Finance), L. Chandrasekaran, CVO, Suresh Chandra Suman, ED (Mines), Jagadish Chandra Mazumdar, CGM/Mine-II, Senior Officials, Employees and Trade Union & Associations representatives also participated.  The VIPs and others planted saplings in the areas surrounding newly inaugurated Eco Tourism Park.
