Tokyo, April 24: India and Japan have reinforced their strategic defence partnership, holding the 8th Army-to-Army Staff Talks from April 22–24 in Japan, with a focus on enhancing bilateral military cooperation and expanding engagement across multiple domains.
During the dialogue, both sides reviewed ongoing defence collaboration measures and outlined future areas of interaction, underscoring their shared commitment to a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific. The talks also included a high-level engagement with the leadership of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, signaling continued momentum in defence ties.
Parallel diplomatic engagements have complemented military cooperation. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently held discussions with his Japanese counterpart Toshimitsu Motegi on evolving geopolitical developments, including security of global shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz—a critical artery for global energy supplies.
The strategic dialogue builds on recent high-level interactions, including meetings on the sidelines of the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and engagements focused on defence technology and economic security. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri also held discussions with Sadamasa Oue to strengthen cooperation under the India–Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.
The sustained engagement highlights growing alignment between the two nations amid evolving regional and global security dynamics, with defence, technology, and economic security emerging as key pillars of the partnership.
