New Delhi, March 10 To ensure uninterrupted cooking gas supply for households, India’s oil refineries have increased liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) production by around 10 per cent following directions from the Centre, government sources said on Tuesday.
The move comes after concerns were raised in some quarters about a possible shortage. Officials said the additional production has helped stabilise supplies and ensure that households continue to receive LPG without disruption.
To prevent misuse of subsidised domestic LPG, the government has also increased the waiting period for new cylinder bookings from 21 days to 25 days.
Officials said the government has invoked the Essential Commodities Act to closely monitor LPG distribution and prevent hoarding or irregularities. However, the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) has not been invoked.
According to sources, all refineries across the country are currently operating at full capacity to maintain steady production. The government is also in touch with multiple countries to ensure India’s energy needs are met.
Officials stressed that household consumption remains the top priority and urged people not to believe unverified messages about an LPG shortage circulating on social media.
“There is no crisis. We have enough energy resources and supplies are stable,” a government source said.
