India Approves SAF Blending in Aviation Fuel to Cut Emissions

New Delhi, April 23 The government of India has amended the Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) Control Order to allow blending of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) with conventional jet fuel, aiming to reduce emissions from international flights.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said the move brings SAF under the regulatory framework, expanding ATF’s definition to include blended and co-processed fuels meeting BIS standards. SAF, derived from renewable sources, is compatible with existing aircraft engines and meets global certification norms set by the International Civil Aviation Organization.

The amendment supports India’s compliance with CORSIA, under which mandatory emission offsetting begins in 2027. India has set indicative SAF blending targets of 1% in 2027, 2% in 2028, and 5% by 2030 for international flights.
