Fuel Price Hike in India ? Govt Clears Air Amid West Asia Crisis

The government has imposed temporary restrictions on bulk diesel and petrol sales at retail fuel outlets to prevent diversion and ensure fuel availability.

New Delhi, April 28: The government has clarified that there is no proposal to increase fuel prices in India, despite rising geopolitical tensions in West Asia impacting global oil markets.

At an inter-ministerial briefing, Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, assured that petrol and diesel prices will remain unchanged for now, easing concerns among consumers.

She assured that supplies of LPG, petrol, and diesel are sufficient across the country, urging consumers not to panic. While acknowledging disruptions in imports of crude oil, LPG, and piped natural gas (PNG), Sharma said contingency measures have ensured minimal impact on domestic availability.

The government has prioritised 100% supply for domestic LPG and PNG consumers, as well as for CNG used in transportation. Commercial LPG availability, though initially affected, has been restored to around 70%, with critical sectors such as healthcare and education receiving priority.

Essential industries including pharmaceuticals, steel, agriculture, and seeds are also being prioritised to avoid supply disruptions. Additionally, supply of 5-kg free trade LPG cylinders—widely used by migrant workers—has nearly doubled to support vulnerable groups.

The reassurance comes amid ongoing uncertainty in global oil markets linked to developments in West Asia. Officials said the situation is under continuous review to ensure supply stability and prevent any immediate impact on domestic fuel prices.
