New Delhi, July 28: The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG: MBY) continues to accelerate India’s clean energy transition, with 39,72,447 rooftop solar (RTS) systems installed nationwide since its launch in February 2024. Informing the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik said the scheme has benefited 48,02,717 households, including a significant number of rural households. During 2025-26 alone, 18.71 lakh rooftop solar systems were installed, adding a cumulative 6.7 GW of solar power capacity and bringing clean, affordable electricity to 22.71 lakh households across the country.
One of the most significant achievements of the flagship scheme has been the sharp reduction in household electricity bills. According to data reported by power distribution companies (DISCOMs), more than 18.93 lakh beneficiaries have recorded zero electricity bills for at least one billing cycle after installing rooftop solar systems. The scheme is designed as a demand-driven initiative, enabling all residential consumers with a grid-connected electricity connection to apply for financial support through the National Portal and install rooftop solar systems to generate their own electricity.
Apart from residential installations, the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana also promotes rooftop solar deployment on government buildings, commercial establishments, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities. However, the government does not provide Central Financial Assistance (CFA) for these categories, as rooftop solar projects are considered financially viable without subsidies. The focus of the financial assistance remains on encouraging residential consumers, particularly households, to adopt renewable energy and reduce their dependence on conventional electricity sources.
India’s rapid expansion of rooftop solar aligns with the country’s broader clean energy ambitions. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), nearly half of India’s additional electricity demand by 2030 is expected to be met through solar energy, while another quarter will come from other low-carbon energy sources such as wind, hydroelectric and nuclear power. The continued success of the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is expected to play a vital role in achieving India’s renewable energy targets, lowering household energy costs, improving energy security and supporting the country’s transition towards a sustainable and low-carbon economy.
