Mumbai, July 22: Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) reported a standalone net loss of ₹3,962.13 crore for the first quarter of FY 2026–27, compared with a net profit of ₹6,123.93 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year.

Despite the sharp decline in profitability, the state-owned oil marketing company recorded strong topline growth. Revenue from operations rose 23.1% year-on-year to ₹1,59,479.28 crore during Q1 FY27, up from ₹1,29,577.89 crore in Q1 FY26. Total income also increased by 23.3% to ₹1,60,732.72 crore, compared with ₹1,30,326.60 crore a year earlier.

The company’s Profit Before Tax (PBT) slipped to a loss of ₹5,305.18 crore, against a profit of ₹8,156.50 crore in the same quarter last year. Consequently, basic earnings per share (EPS) declined to ₹(9.27) from ₹14.33 in Q1 FY26.

Operational Performance

BPCL processed 10.15 million metric tonnes (MMT) of crude during the quarter, compared with 10.42 MMT in the corresponding period last year. Domestic market sales remained broadly stable at 13.62 MMT, marginally higher than 13.58 MMT in Q1 FY26, while export sales increased to 0.51 MMT from 0.45 MMT.

Domestic sales registered a modest 0.29% growth, compared to 3.19% growth recorded during the same quarter of the previous fiscal.

Consolidated Financial Performance

On a consolidated basis, BPCL’s revenue from operations stood at ₹1,59,527.05 crore, up from ₹1,29,614.69 crore in Q1 FY26. However, the company reported a consolidated net loss of ₹1,872.70 crore, compared with a profit of ₹6,839.02 crore in the corresponding quarter last year.

Basic consolidated EPS also turned negative at ₹(4.38), compared with ₹16.01 a year ago.

Segment Performance

The Downstream Petroleum business, which contributes the bulk of BPCL’s revenues, generated ₹1,59,479.28 crore in revenue during the quarter but recorded a segment loss of ₹5,919.53 crore.

In contrast, the company’s Exploration & Production (E&P) Hydrocarbons segment generated ₹47.77 crore in revenue while reporting segment earnings of ₹2,084.10 crore, partially offsetting losses from the downstream business.

BPCL’s Q1 FY27 results reflect a challenging operating environment in the downstream petroleum business, with profitability impacted despite strong revenue growth. While higher sales boosted turnover, losses in the core refining and marketing business weighed on overall earnings. Investors will closely monitor refining margins, fuel demand and crude oil price trends in the coming quarters.
