New Delhi, May 23 US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Saturday and emphasised stronger energy and strategic cooperation between the two countries.

According to the US State Department, Rubio said the United States would not allow Iran to hold the global energy market hostage and highlighted that US energy supplies could help diversify India’s energy needs.

The two leaders discussed the situation in the Middle East, trade, defence and emerging technologies, while reviewing progress under the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.

Rubio also invited PM Modi to visit the White House on behalf of President Donald Trump.

“The Secretary and Prime Minister agreed to deepen trade and defence cooperation and accelerate collaboration on critical and emerging technologies,” the US State Department said.

PM Modi described the meeting as productive and said India and the US would continue working closely for global peace and security.

The Prime Minister’s Office said Modi reiterated India’s support for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve regional conflicts.

Rubio is on a four-day India visit ahead of the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi on May 26, which will also be attended by ministers from Australia and Japan. The Ministry of External Affairs said the visit will further strengthen India-US ties.
