Government Bars PNG Users from Holding LPG Cylinders to Optimise Supply & Step up LPG Production

51 Lakh+ LPG Cylinders Supplied in One Day, No Shortage at Gas Agencies

New Delhi, Mar 15 Under an amended supply order, the Petroleum Ministry announced on Saturday that it has prohibited customers with piped natural gas (PNG) connections from keeping, acquiring, or refilling domestic LPG cylinders.

The Ministry said in a statement that the amendment also forbids government oil marketing companies from providing new LPG connections or refilling cylinders for customers who already have PNG connections.

The Union government is taking this action in an effort to maximize LPG availability in the face of supply disruptions in international markets.

Additionally, due to safety concerns, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) cautioned customers against storing fuel in loose or improper containers.

The government on Saturday said that domestic LPG production has been increased by about 31 per cent as part of measures to ensure uninterrupted supply of cooking gas amid the evolving geopolitical situation in West Asia.

The Ministry stated that there is no fuel shortage and that all gas stations have enough inventory in a post on X. All throughout the nation, retail establishments have sufficient supplies of gasoline and diesel. Fuel poses significant safety risks, so consumers are advised not to transport or store it in loose or improper containers,” the Ministry continued.

India imports almost 90% of its LPG needs, making it the second-largest LPG consumer in the world. The nation is currently the fourth-largest refining hub in the world, with a refining capacity of about 258 MMTPA, the official continued.

Additionally, on March 9, the Union government issued a Natural Gas Control Order under the Essential Commodities Act, directing a 100% uninterrupted supply of PNG and CNG.There’s no reason to panic. Approximately 80% of supply to commercial and industrial consumers is regulated.
