NLC India Launches Near-Space HAB Mission

Neyveli, March 08: NLC India Limited organised a scientific outreach programme titled “Near Space Payload Launch – High Altitude Balloon (HAB) Mission” on March 7, 2026, aimed at promoting interest in space science and atmospheric research among school students.

The event was held at Bharathi Stadium and was inaugurated by Prasanna Kumar Motupalli, Chairman and Managing Director of NLC India Limited, in the presence of Samir Swarup, Director (Human Resources), and D. V. S. N. Murthy, Executive Director (Legal, CSR & GH) and President of the NLCIL Schools Central School Committee.

As part of the programme, a high-altitude balloon carrying a specially designed near-space payload was successfully launched, witnessed by around 2,000 students. The payload is designed to reach near-space altitudes and collect atmospheric data, images and other scientific observations.

The mission provided students with first-hand exposure to key concepts in atmospheric science, payload systems, telemetry and space technology, enabling them to observe a real-time scientific experiment.

Students from NLCIL schools actively participated in the programme, which aimed to spark curiosity about space exploration and encourage interest in science and technology careers.

Addressing the gathering, Prasanna Kumar Motupalli emphasised the importance of nurturing young talent in science, innovation and space research, noting that exposure to advanced scientific concepts helps prepare the next generation of scientists and engineers.

He also appreciated the participation of 25 girl students in the mission on the eve of International Women’s Day, highlighting the importance of encouraging greater involvement of girls in science and technology fields.
