New Delhi, March 06: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has strengthened its parcel logistics network by introducing refrigerated parcel van services to transport horticultural and other perishable produce from Mizoram, a move aimed at expanding market access for local farmers and traders.
According to NFR Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, the launch of passenger and freight train services has significantly improved both passenger mobility and goods transportation across the state, contributing to economic growth and tourism development.
The development comes as NITI Aayog recently declared Mizoram as the ‘Ginger Capital of India’, recognising the state’s rapid growth in ginger production and its reputation for high-quality output.
Rail connectivity in the state received a major boost after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 51.38-km Bairabi–Sairang railway line on September 13, 2025. The project connected the state capital Aizawl to the national railway network for the first time.
Freight operations have also gathered pace. On March 3, 2026, the first-ever foodgrain cargo train from the Food Corporation of India (FCI) arrived at Sairang railway station carrying around 25,900 quintals of rice from Punjab across 42 wagons, strengthening supply chain logistics for essential commodities.
