AI-based weather forecasting: Govt sent monsoon forecasts to 3.8 crore farmers this year

India Eyes 18,000 MW Power Generation Potential from Agricultural Residues

New Delhi, Sep 12 The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare (MoAFW) provided AI-based monsoon forecasts via SMS (m-Kisan) to approximately 3.8 crore farmers across 13 states, up to four weeks earlier than usual.

This targeted dissemination of AI weather forecasts, a first of its kind, aims to empower farmers for Kharif agricultural planning by providing critical insights into monsoon arrival and progression, including mid-season pauses.

This forecast was available earlier than ever before—up to four weeks ahead of the rain.

This is the first-of-its-kind targeted dissemination of AI weather forecasts to date, marking MoAFW as a world-leader in applying AI weather forecasting to directly benefit farmers.

The initiative was discussed with Nobel Laureate Michael Kremer, highlighting its role in helping farmers adapt to climate change-induced weather variability.
