New Delhi, June 02 Mother Dairy on Tuesday said it has no immediate plans to further increase retail milk prices, stating that the supply and procurement situation across the country is “comfortable”.
The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) wholly owned company, which sells around 55 lakh litres of milk daily across various states, raised retail milk prices by Rs 2 per litre on May 14. The hike came after a year and was described as a partial pass-through of rising input and farmer procurement costs.
“I do not foresee any further increase. But then if there is any increase in input cost and we are in a situation where we are unable to meet our ends, we will see,” Mother Dairy Chairman Meenesh Shah said at a press conference in New Delhi. “But, as of now, we have no intention to increase the consumer price.”
Shah, who is also the chairman of NDDB, said milk procurement from farmers is comfortable and the country’s milk production is expected to rise 4–6 percent during the current financial year from around 250 million tonnes recorded in the previous year.
He added that annual growth in milk output is keeping pace with rising consumption and that India should be able to meet growing demand for dairy products over the next 10–15 years. The Union government has been implementing measures to boost animal health and productivity, and more dairy cooperative societies are being formed nationwide, Shah noted.
Mother Dairy previously said the May revision was necessitated by a sustained increase in farmer procurement prices—around six percent over the past year—despite efforts to limit the impact on consumers. The company said the revision represented only a partial pass-through and that it passes nearly 75–80 percent of its realisation from milk sales to farmers.
Set up in 1974, Mother Dairy reported a 17 percent growth in turnover to Rs 20,300 crore in FY26, driven by increased demand for milk products and cooking oils. The company markets milk and dairy items under the ‘Mother Dairy’ brand, edible oils under ‘Dhara’, and fresh produce and processed horticulture products under ‘Safal’. It operates nine milk processing plants, four horticulture processing plants, and works with 16 associated units for edible oil manufacturing.
