New Delhi, June 03 The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a week of thunderstorms and rainfall across Delhi-NCR, saying temperatures in the city are likely to remain below 40 degrees Celsius until June 5. The announcement comes after several days of relatively mild weather that offered temporary relief to residents.

On Tuesday, the city recorded a maximum temperature of 37.7°C, about 2.3°C below the seasonal normal. IMD monitoring stations across Delhi showed below-normal readings: Ayanagar recorded 36.1°C, Safdarjung 37.7°C with a minimum of 26.8°C, Lodhi Road 36.0°C, Palam 35.9°C and The Ridge 37.2°C. These values were between 2.5°C and 5.0°C lower than typical temperatures for this time of year.

The Met department has warned of thunderstorms and rainfall across the National Capital Region through the coming days, advising citizens to take normal precautions during spells of rain and localized gusty winds. Weather alerts and short-term forecasts from the IMD will be issued as systems evolve.

At the same time, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on Tuesday signalled broader global implications. WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo said that unusually warm ocean waters in the tropical Pacific are fostering El Niño conditions that are likely to influence temperature and rainfall patterns worldwide.

“We need to prepare for a potentially strong El Niño event, which will exacerbate drought and heavy rainfall and increase the risk of heatwaves both on land and in the ocean,” Saulo said at a press briefing in Geneva. She noted that the most recent El Niño in 2023–24 was among the five strongest on record and contributed to record global temperatures in 2024.

WMO officials said they will closely monitor oceanic and atmospheric indicators over the coming months and continue to issue seasonal forecasts and early warnings to governments, humanitarian agencies and climate-sensitive sectors. Early advisories are intended to help save lives and mitigate socioeconomic impacts by enabling preparedness in areas prone to floods, droughts and heat extremes.

For Delhi residents, the immediate takeaway is a brief spell of cooler-than-normal days and the possibility of rainfall. Authorities and citizens are urged to stay updated with IMD warnings, prepare for localized waterlogging during heavy rains, and follow safety instructions in case of thunderstorms and strong winds.
