The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has showcased significant progress in faster income tax return (ITR) processing, quicker refunds and improved grievance redressal, reaffirming its commitment to building a transparent and taxpayer-friendly tax administration. The achievements were highlighted during the 167th Income Tax Day celebrations in New Delhi.

CBDT Chairman Ravi Agarwal said the department has made measurable progress in reducing tax litigation, speeding up appeal disposal and improving tax certainty through Advance Pricing Agreements (APAs). These initiatives are intended to provide greater confidence and ease for taxpayers.

Agarwal noted that the department has significantly improved the processing of tax returns, appeal-effect orders and refund issuance, while strengthening mechanisms for addressing taxpayer grievances. The focus remains on delivering faster and more efficient services.

The chairman also highlighted taxpayer engagement programmes such as PRARAMBH and Samvaad, which are helping improve awareness, communication and voluntary tax compliance across the country.

Technology continues to play a central role in the department’s reforms. Initiatives including PAN 2.0, ITBA 2.0, IEC 3.0, Kar Saathi and the SAKSHAM NUDGE framework are designed to simplify compliance, enhance digital services and improve the overall taxpayer experience.

Revenue Secretary Arvind Shrivastava described the implementation of the Income-tax Act, 2025 and the new Rules and Forms as landmark reforms. During the event, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also released six flagship publications reflecting the Income Tax Department’s focus on transparency, knowledge sharing and citizen-centric governance.
