An administrator shut down an Instagram fan page with over 70,000 followers. The admin closed the page because Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif didn’t speak about the student protests in India. This move started a big uproar online about whether famous actors must talk about social issues.
The youth-driven Cockroach Janta Party leads the ongoing protests. Students are demonstrating in New Delhi against leaks in the NEET exam papers. They also want reforms in the education system. Several actors, including Shabana Azmi and Sonu Sood, supported the students. However, Katrina Kaif hasn’t made any public statement about the matter.
The page administrator wrote a final message before deactivating the account. The message stated that the admin had loved the actress since childhood. But the admin felt really disappointed because of her quietness. The note accused her of not having the courage to speak against the government. The note also said she betrayed the people who supported her when she was struggling.
This action split opinion on social media. Some people supported the administrator. They said that popular figures should use their power to help students. Other fans defended the actress. They argued that she’s got a right to choose what she talks about in public. These fans said that people shouldn’t force actors to take a side.
