Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed the Land Border Districts’ Superintendents of Police Conference–2026 in New Delhi, outlining the government’s long-term vision for modernising India’s border security architecture. He said the conference has institutionalised a comprehensive approach to border management and will also expand its focus to coastal border security in the future.

Highlighting the government’s Smart Border vision, Shah said India is building a quadrangular security grid by integrating border guarding forces, state governments, district administrations, central agencies and local communities. He stressed that a secure border, prosperous border regions and a vigilant society together form the foundation of national security.

The Home Minister said the Modi government has increased investment in border infrastructure by 400 percent, adopting scientific and technology-driven approaches to strengthen surveillance and response capabilities. He added that India is transitioning from isolated border outposts to an integrated security grid capable of addressing evolving security challenges more effectively.

Emphasising internal security, Shah said the government is committed to making India infiltration-free while tackling proxy war, narcotics trafficking, smuggling, drone threats, cybercrime, organised crime and radicalisation. He expressed confidence that within the next three years, the country would significantly weaken the narcotics network through coordinated enforcement efforts.

The Home Minister also highlighted the Vibrant Villages Programme, under which Prime Minister Narendra Modi has described the country’s last village as its first village. The initiative aims to prevent migration, generate employment and ensure complete implementation of welfare schemes in border areas, making them more resilient and economically vibrant.

Shah further announced that the government is investing ₹31,000 crore to fence the 1,610-km India-Myanmar border, while also referring to the Demography Mission, which will study demographic changes, identify abnormal growth patterns and recommend policy measures to address them. He underlined the need for timely reporting of demographic changes from the grassroots to the highest levels of government.

Conclusion

The conference reaffirmed the government’s commitment to building a technology-driven, integrated and proactive border security system, while combining infrastructure development, community participation and intelligence-led policing to safeguard India’s borders.
