Indian Railways Approves ₹175 Crore Raipur Project to Expand Maintenance Facilities for 250 Electric Locomotives

Indian Railways approves Raipur electric locomotive facility

Indian Railways has approved a ₹175 crore project to create additional homing facilities for 250 three-phase electric locomotives at Raipur under South East Central Railway. The infrastructure upgrade will enhance maintenance capacity, optimize existing assets, and support the growing electric locomotive fleet across the network.

Key Highlights

  • Indian Railways sanctions a ₹175 crore infrastructure project at Raipur.
  • Additional homing facilities will accommodate 250 three-phase electric locomotives.
  • The project will strengthen maintenance capacity and improve asset utilisation.
  • The expansion supports the rapid growth of freight, passenger services and railway electrification.

New Delhi, July 10: Indian Railways has approved a ₹175 crore project to establish additional homing facilities for 250 three-phase electric locomotives at the High Horse Power (HHP) Diesel Shed, Raipur, under the South East Central Railway (SECR). The investment is aimed at strengthening maintenance infrastructure while supporting the expanding electric locomotive fleet across the national rail network.

Homing is the process of assigning a locomotive to a designated maintenance shed, which becomes its primary base for routine servicing, safety inspections, repairs and technical upkeep. These facilities play a critical role in ensuring the safe, reliable and efficient operation of locomotives throughout their service life.

The newly approved project forms part of Indian Railways’ long-term infrastructure modernization strategy, which focuses on expanding maintenance capacity in line with the rapid electrification of railway operations. As the number of electric locomotives continues to increase, additional homing facilities will help ensure timely maintenance and improve fleet availability.

The Raipur HHP Depot will benefit from enhanced infrastructure that enables better utilisation of existing railway assets while creating additional space for future technological upgrades and operational expansion. The improved maintenance ecosystem is expected to increase operational efficiency and reduce turnaround time for electric locomotives.

The investment also supports Indian Railways’ commitment to sustainable transportation, as electric locomotives continue to replace diesel traction across major freight and passenger corridors. By strengthening maintenance capabilities, the project will contribute to higher reliability, improved operational performance and greater network efficiency.

With freight movement and passenger traffic steadily rising, Indian Railways is investing in modern maintenance infrastructure to support long-term capacity expansion. The Raipur project reflects the organisation’s continued focus on building a future-ready railway system capable of meeting India’s growing transportation demands.

Conclusion

The ₹175 crore Raipur homing facility project will significantly enhance Indian Railways’ maintenance capacity, support fleet expansion and improve the efficiency of electric locomotive operations across the network.
