Construction of the new Kanpur-Kabrai Greenfield Highway approved by the Union Cabinet

The Union Cabinet has approved a ₹7,145.14 crore project to construct a 117.7-km access-controlled greenfield highway between Kanpur and Kabrai. The four-lane corridor, designed for future six-laning, will cut travel time from 3.5 hours to 1.5 hours, strengthen logistics under the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan and improve connectivity between Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

Key Highlights

  • Cabinet approves ₹7,145.14 crore Kanpur-Kabrai greenfield highway project.
  • 117.7-km four-lane corridor designed for future six-laning.
  • Travel time between Kanpur and Kabrai to reduce from 3.5 hours to 1.5 hours.
  • Project expected to generate nearly 1.2 crore person-days of employment.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the construction of a 117.7-km Kanpur-Kabrai access-controlled greenfield highway at an estimated cost of ₹7,145.14 crore. The ambitious infrastructure project will form a crucial section of the Bhopal-Kanpur Economic Corridor under the National Highways Programme.

The project will be implemented by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) Toll model. Besides constructing the new corridor, the concessionaire will also undertake the operation and maintenance of the existing Kanpur-Kabrai section of NH-34, ensuring seamless traffic management across the route.

Designed as a four-lane access-controlled highway with provisions for future six-laning, the corridor will support operating speeds of 80-100 kmph, significantly improving travel efficiency. Once completed, travel time between Kanpur and Kabrai will reduce from approximately 3.5 hours to just 1.5 hours, resulting in lower vehicle operating costs, enhanced road safety and faster movement of passengers and freight.

The highway will strengthen connectivity between Kanpur, Kabrai, Sagar, Bhopal and other parts of Madhya Pradesh, creating an efficient economic corridor linking the industrial and commercial hubs of Uttar Pradesh with the mineral-rich, manufacturing and agricultural regions of Madhya Pradesh.

According to the government, the project will provide strategic connectivity with NH-34, NH-35, the Bundelkhand Expressway, Kanpur Ring Road and several State Highways, improving integration with the regional highway network. It will also facilitate smoother transportation to the Kabrai mining belt, enabling faster movement of minerals, construction materials, industrial goods and agricultural produce.

The highway aligns with the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan, strengthening connectivity to 16 key economic nodes, including industrial areas at Unnao, Banther, Pankhi, Rania, Jainpur, Rooma, Chakeri, Sumerpur and Bhuragarh, along with the Trans Ganga Integrated Township, Growth Centre Jaipur, Kanpur Nagar Node and Bengal Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

Officials said the project will improve logistics efficiency, reduce transportation costs, enhance supply chain resilience and accelerate industrial development across Bundelkhand and neighbouring regions of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

The highway project is also expected to provide a significant employment boost. During construction, it is estimated to generate around 11,188 direct and 13,985 indirect person-days of employment per lane per kilometre, amounting to nearly 1.2 crore person-days of employment. By FY 2028, the corridor is projected to carry an average daily traffic of around 18,069 passenger car units (PCUs), reflecting its long-term economic and transportation importance.

Conclusion

The approval of the ₹7,145 crore Kanpur-Kabrai Greenfield Highway marks another major step in India’s infrastructure expansion under PM GatiShakti. By reducing travel time, strengthening industrial connectivity, improving logistics and generating substantial employment, the project is expected to drive economic growth across Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and the Bundelkhand region.
