New Delhi, April 23, 2026: Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi on Wednesday said India has achieved its highest-ever annual addition in wind energy capacity, with a record 6.1 GW installed during FY 2025–26.
Addressing the foundation day event of the Wind Independent Power Producers Association (WIPPA), the minister highlighted that India currently ranks fourth globally in wind energy, with over 56.1 GW of installed capacity and an additional 28 GW under implementation.
Emphasising the sector’s vast potential, Joshi noted that India’s wind energy capacity at 150-metre hub height is estimated at nearly 1,164 GW. He expressed confidence that the country will achieve 100 GW capacity by 2030 and 156 GW by 2036, contributing significantly to its net-zero target by 2070.
The minister underlined the strategic importance of wind energy in stabilising the power system, noting that nearly 45 per cent of generation occurs during peak demand hours, particularly in the evening and night, complementing solar power.
Highlighting policy initiatives, Joshi said the government has introduced a dedicated wind component under Renewable Purchase Obligations to ensure sustained demand. Measures such as enforcement of Late Payment Surcharge rules, transparent bidding processes, and implementation of the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) are boosting investor confidence and promoting domestic manufacturing.
He added that India has developed a strong domestic manufacturing ecosystem with an annual capacity exceeding 24 GW and indigenisation levels of 70–80 per cent, supported by a robust supply chain for key components.
The government is also working on addressing industry concerns such as Deviation Settlement Mechanism penalties, curtailment, and transmission delays, while promoting hybrid and round-the-clock renewable energy projects for improved grid efficiency.
Joshi further noted that initiatives like Green Energy Open Access, repowering of old turbines, and expansion of transmission infrastructure under the Green Energy Corridor are strengthening the sector. Innovative financing mechanisms, including blended finance and credit enhancement frameworks, are also being explored to mobilise investments.
He said a recently launched 500 MW pilot under the Contracts for Difference model is expected to provide revenue stability and support market growth.
The minister emphasised that evolving global supply chain dynamics present a major opportunity for India to emerge as a trusted manufacturing hub in the wind energy sector.
