CEC Sushil Chandra says elections should be free , fair and inclusive
Former Karnataka CM Veerappa Moily says there should be state funding of elections
New Delhi, March 26” The Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra today said the constant endeavor of the election commission (ECI) was to conduct elections which were free fair and inclusive. “ It is only through this that a truly representative parliament is chosen”.
Presenting the awards to top performing MPs in the 12th edition of the Sansad Ratna awards 2022 at the Maharashtra sadan at New Delhi today, Sushil Chandra said it was ECI’s constant endeavour that voters were well informed so that the best candidate was chosen for the parliament or assembly who could represent them.
ECI gives complete information about the candidates, their educational background assets and labilities and criminal antecedents . if any and the same is published on the website for the awareness of the voters, he said.
From the general elections held in 1951 when 17.30 crore voters. turn out was around 45.6 %. During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections the number of voters was around 91.20 crore. Voter turn out was around 66.4 %. As on today there are more than 95.30 crore voters out of which 49.04 crore are male voters and 46.09 voters are females. Among this, 1.92 crore are senior citizens are 80 plus and 81.39 lakh persons with disabilities. More than 1.37 crore newly registered voters have been recorded.
A new feature of the 12th session of the Sansad Ratna awards committee was the life time achievement APJ Abdul Kalam award given to 95-year-old veteran MLA of the Tamil Nadu assembly DR H V Hande , who was a former health minister. Former Chief Minister of Karnataka , Veerappa Moily , veteran MLA and MP, was also the recipient of this award.
In his acceptance speech, Veerappa Moily gave a soul stirring speech saying electoral reforms were necessary to ensure that money power did not come in the way of genuine candidates who struggled to muster the finances to contest elections. He said in fact the government should explore the concept of state funding of elections
Mr Arjun Ram Meghwal , Minister of state for Parliamentary affairs, presiding, said the Sansadratna had a come a long way in honoring top performing MPs ,in the last 12 years under the vision of the late president Dr APJ AabdulKalam. He said the foundations awards would inspire young MPs to perform well in the benefit of citizens. Mr N K Premachandran , RSP, also a previous Sansadratna award winner and member of the jury committee, the foundation had a set trend in rewarding MPs for their good performance.
