Made in India Telecom Chips Achieve Milestone with TEC Certification

New Delhi, Sep 06 Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the certification of a telecom system utilizing solely domestically-produced chips by the Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC).

This achievement is described as a significant step for India’s semiconductor industry, facilitating domestic deployment and opening avenues for the export of Indian-made chips. The TEC certification acts as a quality benchmark for telecom equipment.

This milestone contributes to India’s objective of decreasing dependence on imported semiconductors, thereby mitigating supply chain risks highlighted by global shortages. India’s strategy involves strengthening its capacity in chip design, assembly, testing, and integration.

The concentration of global chip production in select countries presents supply chain risks that India aims to counter. Semiconductor equipment manufacturer ASML Holding NV intends to enhance its collaborations with Indian businesses.

The India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), launched in 2021, promotes domestic semiconductor manufacturing and design through a Rs 76,000 crore Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. Approved projects under this scheme total Rs 1.60 lakh crore, encompassing significant investments such as Tata Electronics’ fab, Micron’s packaging facility, and CG Power’s OSAT pilot line.

India is prioritizing mature nodes (28nm–65nm) for telecommunications, automotive, and industrial applications. The Indian semiconductor market, valued at $38 billion in 2023, is forecasted to grow to $100-$110 billion by 2030, while the global market is projected to reach $1 trillion by the same year.
