Critical mineral rich northeast offers massive opportunity for India

The northeast's critical mineral wealth presents India with enormous opportunities.

New Delhi, July 19 India’s northeastern region is becoming a frontrunner in several fields, with the government focusing on transforming untapped resources into economic growth, employment, and local empowerment. The region is home to critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, chromium, rare earths, graphite, and vanadium.

Recently-concluded ‘North-East Mining Ministers’ Conclave’ in Guwahati underlined the Centre’s commitment to strengthen mining infrastructure, fast-track project approvals, and promote sustainable mining practices in the northeastern region.

The development of the northeast is central to the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, with the eight states Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Sikkim rightfully celebrated as Ashta Lakshmi.

The National Mineral Exploration Trust survey identified 38 blocks in the region, with seven cleared for auction. These minerals are essential for semiconductors, smartphones, servers, precision tools, telecom equipment, medical electronics, batteries, and clean energy.

India’s mineral auction framework has gained momentum, with 283 mineral blocks up for auction since FY2024-25. India holds 8% of the world’s rare earth element reserves, making it a key player in the global supply landscape.
