President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev has approved the Program of Measures for the Further Development of Renewable Energy, Improving Energy Efficiency in the Economic and Social Spheres for 2017-2021. Its implementation will allow diversifying the fuel balance through renewable energy sources, replacing them with traditional fuels and reducing their share in the production of electricity and heat.

In the framework of the program, Uzbekistan plans to implement 810 projects for a total of $5.3 billion by the end of 2025.

These projects include reduction in the energy intensity of production in the basic sectors of the economy, in which 25 largest Uzbek enterprises and organizations should reach record levels of reducing specific energy consumption rates for industrial production.

In the next five years, 17,251 boilers are to be replaced in 6,333 budget organizations of the Ministry of Public Education, the Ministry of Health and the Center for Secondary Specialized Vocational Education. This will save more than 56.5 million cubic meters of natural gas.

As a result, according to experts’ estimates, by 2025 Uzbekistan will significantly increase electricity production with bringing the share of renewable sources in the structure of generating capacities from the current 12.7 percent to 19.7 percent.

For example, the share of hydropower will increase from 12.7 to 15.8 percent, solar energy – up to 2.3 percent and wind power – up to 1.6 percent. Also, a drastic reduction in the energy intensity of production will be achieved – by 9.79 million tons of standard fuel or annually by an average of at least 8-10 percent.
