NLC is a role model to Mining Industry-Rahul Guha


Chennai, Sept 11 : In his Chief guest’s address, Rahul Guha, Director General of Mines Safety, Dhanbad, lauded the performance of NLC Mines and said that NLC mines are the model Mines and the work force is a dedicated one with commitment to develop this organisation. He further added that , a system based approach is fast catching up and the safety standards in our country is improving.  He informed the gathering that soon, the Statutory Examinations conducted by Director General of Mines Safety , Dhanbad would go “Online”, to facilitate the aspirers.

B. Surender Mohan, CMD, NLC was the president of the function. During his address he informed that most of the accidents are caused only due to human failures though a full-fledged safety management system is in existence. In the present situation, the cell phone menace has increased the number of accidents. People succumbed to injuries when they use mobile phones while driving. At work spot also, a system should be developed for  jamming of cell phone operation.  He further informed that during, 2013, the mines unit of NLC had zero fatal accidents
Safety week -2014 is being observed  by Neyveli Lignite Corporation Ltd., at Neyveli from 01/09/2014 to 07/09/2014. Various units of NLC put up stalls showcasing the safety measures to be adopted while at work and innovative steps to improve the safety management systems. Every day, each unit organised cultural event depicting safety to create awareness amongst public/employees.

This year’s celebrations were started by S.Boopathy, Director (Projects & Planning), NLC and Chairman of the  NLC Safety Week Celebrations-2014, with the flagging off safety week rally, at Lignite hall, Block-11, wherein large number of students participated. The valedictory function of the week long celebrations was celebrated as Mines day on 07/09/2014. This year, the Tamil Nadu State Level Function had been organised at Neyveli wherein large number of participants from cement industries, small mines were present. This year , Rahul Guha, Director General of Mines Safety, Dhanbad was invited as the Chief Guest for the valedictory function and P.K.Sarkar, Deputy Director General Mines Safety, Southern Region, Bengaluru and A.K.Megharaj, Director of Mines Safety , Chennai Region and Patron of Tamil Nadu Mine Safety Association were Guests of Honour.

Felicitations were extended by P.K.Sarkar, DDGMS( Southern Region, Bengaluru), A.K.Megaraj, DMS ( Chennai Region),  M.S. Ravindranath, President ,Tamil Nadu Mines Safety Association and  S.Boopathy, Director(  Projects & Planning) and Chairman of the Safety Week Celebrations-2014. On this occasion, Rakeshkumar, Director(Finance), NLC, S.Rajagopal, Director (Power & Mines), Shivraj Singh, Chief Vigilance Officer, NLC were present. Various competitions were held on the topic “safety” and the winners were awarded with prizes. Also, based on the recommendation of the safety inspection team which carried out inspection of the mines unit, prizes were awarded to the best work place. Also on this occasion, trade test were conducted to workmen from various mines, Tamil Nadu and from Neyveli and the winners were awarded with prizes.

P. Selvakumar, General Manager/Mine-1A, NLC and Secretary, the Tamil Nadu Mines Safety Association briefed the various activities of the association. Earlier, C. Senthamil Selvan, Executive Director(Mines), NLC welcomed the gathering and R.Kanagachalam rendered the vote of thanks.  Among the production units the Mine-I,Mine-IA unit of NLC won the CMD’s Shield for the  for the year 2013, for achieving the zero accident potential and TPS-II the retaining shield for the same zero accident potential. Among Non-production units, The transport Department won the Director Mines’ Shield for achieving zero accident potential for the year 2013.
