A new conveyor System installed by using old materials available in the Mine, to transport lignite from Mine-1A to the Neyveli New Thermal Power Station and Thermal Power Station-I was inaugurated by Sri Rakesh Kumar, CMD (Additional Charge) & Director (Finance) on 14.09.2018.

Mine-1A in Neyveli, with a production capacity of 30 Lakh Ton of lignite/Per Annum was brought up to cater the fuel needs of M/s. TAQA, an Independent Power Producer, Cement factories in Tamilnadu and other industries. To feed the lignite of this Mine to Neyveli TPSs, a conveyor measuring 832 Meter was erected in the bunker area of Mine-IA, to carry lignite to Neyveli Thermal Power Station and Thermal Power Station-I. This new conveyor system  erected in Mine-1A was linked with the existing conveyor system operating from Mine-1, which carries lignite to Thermal Power Stations.

The auxiliaries, such as Belts, Frames, Rollers, High Tension Power Cables, Drive Head etc., required to erect the new system was taken-up from the old materials available in the Mine and the erection works are carried out by Departmental Manpower. The Drive Head used in the new Conveyor system was a very old one, which can be shifted by an exclusive equipment called, ‘Walking Pad’. As such no walking pad is available in the mine. So, instead of using ‘walking pad’ to shift the Drive Head to the required place, Bull-Dozer and Pipelayer were used, after doing some modifications in Drive Head. It may be noted, that the cost of new walking pad would be around Rs. 26 Crores. By this effort, shifting of old model Drive Head without using walking pad was done for the first time in the history of NLCIL.

The new conveyor having 1500 mm belt would capable of carrying 1000 Ton of lignite per hour. Since the new system directly provides lignite to the Thermal Power Station, accumulation of old stock for longer period can be avoided; besides transporting through Lorries also not required.

If the same conveyor system was erected with new materials, the company has to spend Rs.18 Crore. Whereas, with the innovative ideas of Engineers and employees of NLCIL, this system was established, without involving a new purchase. Since the available materials were utilized for this set-up, NLCIL had a savings of Rs.18 Crore.

This newly erected conveyor system in Mine-IA was inaugurated by Sri Rakesh Kumar, CMD (Additional Charge) & Director(Finance) of NLCIL in the presence of Sri V. Thangapandian, Director (Power & Mines), Sri R. Vikraman, Director (HR), Sri T. Venkatasubramanian, CVO, Sri S.A.F. Khalid & Sri Hemant Kumar, Executive Directors, Senior officials and employees of NLCIL. The CMD (additional charge) and all Directors eulogized the Engineers and Employees, for the implementation of their innovative thought, which saved the organization to the tune of Rs.18 Crore.
