Shimla, Dec 14 The central government has given the green light for increasing the funding of a river channelisation project in Himachal Pradesh by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal said here Wednesday.

“The central government has approved the enhanced project cost of the Swan river project being executed in Una district from Rs.160 crore to Rs.220 crore,” said Dhumal at a meeting with state foresters.

He said the project implementation period has been extended by one year from March 2014.

The chief minister said the project aimed to regenerate forests, protect farmlands from flooding and reduce soil erosion in 96 gram panchayats.

“The project would benefit 30,000 families, out of which 12,000 families have got benefits. Over 5,500 hectares of land have been protected from floods through afforestation activities and water table has substantially increased in the project area,” Dhumal added.
