| Sudarshan Agarwal is serving as Governor of Uttarakhand,
since January 2003. Born on June 19, 1931 at Ludhiana, Sudarshan Agarwal is
a first class Law Graduate and has also been conferred the Degree of Doctor
of Science (Honoris Causa) by the Gurukul University in Uttarakhand.
Before this appointment he has served as:
- Member of NHRC for 3 years in the rank of a Judge of the Supreme Court
- Secretary-General, Rajya Sabha from 1981 to 1993. As a part of it he
participated in several Parliamentary Conferences and International
Goodwill delegations around the world.
- The President of the Delhi Gymkhana Club, the premier social club in
the capital during 1986-1988.
- Trustee of the Amity Business School, a Cultural Centre, known as the
Sanskriti Pratishthan and Rotary Service to Humanity Awards Trust which
gives an Award of Rs. 2 lakhs each year for outstanding work in the field
of community service, vocational excellence and promotion of international
understanding.
- Chairman of the Uttarakhand State Red Cross Society and State Child
Welfare Council.
- Past President of the Rotary Club of Delhi. He served Rotary
International as District Governor, Director, Member and Chairman of
several Rotary International Committees. He is the recipient of the Rotary
Foundation's citation for Meritorious Service and Rotary Foundation
Distinguished Service Award for his support of its international
humanitarian and educational programmes. He has served as Chairman of
Rotary Foundation (India) from 1992 till 2002.
Among other things he has been vigorously contributing to the field of
Social Service which includes:
- Setting up of a state-of-the-art voluntary Blood Bank in Delhi at a
cost of over Rs. five crores.
- A Foundation to provide scholarships to bright, poor students for
professional courses for which he has already raised over Rs. 8 crores
till now. 70 students are receiving a scholarship of over Rs. 25,000 each
year under this venture.
- Setting up a boarding school for bright girls from impoverished
families of Uttarakhand. The school will be free for these girls and will
be funded out of interest earned on the corpus funds.
