SAIL’s Rourkela Steel Plant completes Rs 118 crore project

New Delhi, September 14, 2005

Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), one of the four integrated steel plants of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) yesterday entered a new era in its objective to sustain the path of Profitability and Prosperity with the lighting up of Annapurna the Blast Furnace No. 4 after rebuilding. The project which has been completed at a cost of Rs.118 crore will for the first time enable the plant to achieve the annual capacity of 2 million tonnes of hot metal.

With the recommissioning of Blast Furnace-4, hot metal output from this furnace alone is expected to go beyond 2000 tonnes per day and the daily hot metal production from all the four Blast Furnace shops is expected to be 6000 tonnes.

A very important consequence of this enhanced production of hot metal will be the availability of adequate feedstock for the downstream units, which produce high value items such as silicon steel, electrolytic tin plates, hot rolled plates, plate mill plates etc. which will enhance the profitability of the steel plant. It may be mentioned that as a preparation to this increased output of hot metal and to sustain high production levels in the plant the capital repairs of the Hot Strip Mill, Plate Mill and Sinter Plant-II, have been completed. Further, the upgradation of ERW Pipe Plant is also complete and is presently undergoing integrated trials. With a favourable steel market for high value products of RSP, this is sure to boost the bottomline significantly.

The Blast Furnace-4, which is the largest among all the Blast Furnaces of RSP, had been taken down around the middle of April this year, with a view to introducing various technological upgradations to enhance its performance.

Dr. Sanak Mishra, Managing Director, RSP lighted up the furnace heralding its readiness for operation.
