Railways launch 'Reservation on Mobile'

New Delhi, September 09, 2004

Buoyed over the grand success of railway reservation on Internet, the Indian Railways today launched yet another passenger friendly service the 'Reservation on Moblie Phone'.

Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav inaugurated the service at a function at Rail Bhavan, and described it as a landmark step towards providing world-class passenger amenities on Railways.

Through this service,to be executed by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), the reservation could be done on Hutch and Reliance mobile phones and payments would be made by credit cards. The efforts were on to provide reservation on landline also using MTNL phones.

Just as the Internet reservation was launched two years ago first on pilot basis in the NCR region and later extended to other cities, the Mobile Reservation has also been launched in NCR and would later be made available in 120 cities.

The Internet reservation service, launched in September 2002, was a great success with more than twenty lakh reservations done through this.
