New Delhi October 14, 2006
With the world going wireless and a continuous evolution of new technology it
is time for India to consider the Ultra Wide Band (UWB) spectrum allocation in
order to connect to the Next Billion. The Ultra Wide Band Technology is
specifically for the personal area network with a huge industry engagement, and
India must build upon a network that can deliver 200 Megahertz put on an
average.
Wireless technology will make it possible to connect the next billion, said
Dr Kevin Kahn, Director, Communications Technology Lab, Intel Corporation, at a
seminar on "Connecting the Next Billion" organized by Confederation of Indian
Industry (CII).
The growing mobility in India and the introduction of WiFi has enabled people
to work at leisure at any place they want. Ubiquitous broadband access, multi-
network support and seamless inter- network transitions are some of the key
principles of Broadband Wireless Access.
DoT is planning to have 550 million new telephone connections in the period
2007-2012 at the rate of 9 million a month.
The challenges to do so are to enhance the Network Coverage to 85% of the
country, have a clear Spectrum Policy, Telecom Regulation to keep ahead of
advances and changes in technology, social aspects including the readiness to
absorb technology in the rural areas, and building human capital.
The telecom industry which has crossed 165 million mark this year with a
total of 10 million internet connections and Copper Networks of MTNL and BSNL in
process of connecting the unconnected, there are numerous challenges like
