SHRI A.K.SHUKLA, Chairman, LIC, hands over cheque for Rs.one crore to Chief minister’s relief fund

Shri A.K.Shukla, Chairman, Life Insurance Corporation of India, today handed over a cheque for Rs. One crore to Shri Vilasrao Deshmukh, Chief Minister of Maharashtra as LIC’s contribution to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (Natural Disasters). Also present on the occasion were Shri K.Sridhar, Managing Director, and Shri Thomas Mathew, Zonal Manager, Western Zone of LIC. 

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Shukla mentioned that it was LIC’s practice to come to the aid of the Government and the people whenever there was a natural disaster. He commended the efforts of LIC’s employees and agents in undertaking relief work during the recent Mumbai floods and also during the earlier occasions like the tsunami, the Gujarat earthquake, etc. He added that LIC’s performance in the area of discharging its Corporate Social Responsibility had won recognition both nationally and internationally from entities like the Institute of Directors, the World Council for Corporate Governance and the Asia Insurance Review. 

Shri K.Sridhar, Managing Director, stated that LIC would be celebrating the month of October as the Social Security Month and that a new scheme called the Mahatma Gandhi Bunkar Yojana had been launched in association with the Ministry of Textiles for handloom weavers on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. 

Shri Thomas Mathew, head of the Western Zone of LIC, gave the details of the exemplary work done by the LIC in the settlement of claims in respect of those who died during the floods in Mumbai and elsewhere. He stated that LIC had already settled 115 claims for Rs. 1,81,74,609 in the states of Maharashtra, Goa and Gujarat.
