RINL approves expansion of capacity to 8.5 mn tonnes
New Delhi November 18, 2006
The rapid growth in the demand for steel in India and abroad, the growing
importance of India as one of the key production and consumption centres of the
world steel industry, and the need to expand and consolidate to maintain its
competitive position vis-à-vis the private sector; the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam
Limited (RINL) in its Board meeting held on November 9, 2006 has approved a
revised expansion plan for a further expansion of capacity beyond 6.8 million
tonnes upto 8.5 million tonnes by the year 2010-2011.
This stage of expansion would include enhancement of the useful volume of the
blast furnaces, oxygen enrichment, additional LD converters, coke over battery,
billet casters and enhancement of rolling mill capacity.A detailed plan is being
prepared to ensure raw material security, improve techno-economics and other
aspects for for increasing capacity of RINL to 16 million tonnes by the year
2018.
