Education is the Basis for Tomorrow's Future

New Delhi, November 29, 2006

Under the title “The Key Challenges Ahead” of the India Economic Summit 2006, jointly organized by the World Economic Forum and the Confederation of Indian Industry it was declared that the government will soon draft new legislation to allow foreign higher education institutions to play a role in the higher education sector in India.

Improving higher education standards and technical training and broadening learning opportunities nationwide were identified as key areas of development. While there are concerns that foreign players might lure away professors from Indian universities, there is also the likelihood that NRI professors may be attracted back to India. The setting up of this mechanism would attract Foreigners to attain education from India, like Indians do now in abroad.

The India Economic Summit 2006 identified four key issues under the sub-themes:

  • State and National Competitiveness
  • Managing Growth
  • Risk Management
  • Infrastructure Development

The Summit closed with a high sense of optimism about the future of the Indian economy when Minister Kamal Nath ended the discussions by saying, “Our course is right, the momentum is right and we will reach where we want to reach.”
