Romania celebrates its National Day on Dec 1

This is the Day that represents the most convincing moment in Romania’s history.

Forced by their destiny to live separately in three main provinces (Wallachia, Transylvania and Moldavia), Romanians have tried for almost two millennia to fulfil their dream of living in one country. The short-time union of the three provinces in 1601, under Michael the Brave, gave them the hope that this was not only a dream, but something they can achieve only if they conjugate their forces together.

Living in three provinces at the crossroad of three main empires of Europe (Ottoman, Russian and Austro-Hungarian), Romanians were still able to keep alive their dream, their traditions and religion.

The first step in making the dream come true has been done on 24th of January 1859, when Romanians living in two of the provinces decided together to elect Alexandru Ioan Cuza as their only ruler, succeeding in this way to unify Wallachia with Moldavia.

It was only in 1918, on 1st of December when the third province-Transylvania-became part of what we call today Romania. This is the reason why The Great Union in 1918, December 1st will remain the most spectacular page in Romanian history. Its grandeur resides in the fact that the accomplishment of the National Unification is not the work of a political figure, or a government, or a political party, but the heroic action of all the Romanians, generated by a powerful spring in the conscience of the people.

The Great Union is not the result of the participation of Romania to any war. This is because neither Russia, nor the Austro-Hungarian Empire were interested in accomplish the millennia dream of the Romanian people to be together again. While the first was interested to help us taking back Transylvania, while retaining a part of Moldavia, the latter wanted the opposite. Therefore, the victory of one of them would heave meant the defeat of the other, so nobody could see a way to bring back all these provinces in the Old Kingdom.

At the foundation of the Great Romania was not a military victory, but the act of will of the Romanian Nation to offer to herself the institutional and territorial net which is the National state.
It was a historical necessity-the Romanian nation needed to live in a national state - which proved stronger than any government or political party that can be egoistic sometimes and, by putting into motion the Nation it gave to her that incredible power to overtake all the adversities and give life to its aspiration of becoming a National State.

From that significant moment - December 1st, 1918 - Romania took the place she deserved in the European space where she belongs geopolitical and by blood - Romans being the ancestors of Romanians.
