India-Japan to exchange sensitive list for free trade pact
New Delhi, March 12, 2008
India and Japan are expected to exchange a list of sensitive
commodities, which will be exempted from tariff reduction
under the proposed free trade agreement.
A team of UNCTAD, which was appointed by the Ministry of
Commerce and Industry to prepare a list of sensitive
commodities, is giving final touches to the list in
consultation with the industry.
"Based on certain parameters we will come up with
recommendations on the sensitive, priority export and less
priority export lists. Then we will submit it to the Commerce
Ministry," UNCTAD India Programme Deputy Project Coordinator
Abhijit Das said here on Tuesday.
"Now we are negotiating Regional Trade Agreements with
developed countries like Japan for which feedback from
industry is needed," Commerce and Industry Ministry Director
Prashant Goyal said while addressing the fifth and final
Workshop on Stakeholder Consultation on India-Japan CEPA at
Ficci.
He said the sensitive list is likely to include items reserved
for the small scale sector in domestic market and products on
which Japanese government was giving subsidy as it could
affect the Indian industry.
However, the country has many products which can penetrate in
Japanese market," he said.
