Russia sends food aid to Libya

Moscow, July 27, 2011

A Russian government aircraft will deliver humanitarian aid to Libyan capital Tripoli, a ministry spokesman said.

The emergencies ministry Ilyushin Il-76 plane, carrying 36 tonnes of canned milk, baby food, sugar and rice took off from an airport near Moscow Tuesday morning.

This was the fourth planeload of humanitarian aid sent by Russia to Libyans affected by fighting between forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi and rebel forces.

Earlier this month, Moscow sent 72 tonnes of aid to Benghazi, which is controlled by the rebels, and 36 tonnes to Tripoli, where Gaddafi forces still maintain authority.
